At the fixed cutoff, the replay contained 458 records eligible under its historical timing rules. The same release contains 493 records first observed later and 3 records kept outside the snapshot because an eligible source was not observable by the cutoff.
CALCULATED This is a deterministic comparison of an information record. It is not an estimate of latent insecurity.
What we examined
A question about the record, not a claim about everything that happened.
Pattern asked: What could actually have been known about insecurity in Nigeria using the evidence available by the cutoff? The scope is the Aegis Stage 4 frozen release, covering 1 January 2023 to 10 July 2026, replayed at a fixed historical cutoff.
The replay includes an event only when its first-observed time and at least one source’s observable time satisfy the cutoff. For structured datasets, the source’s upstream date is part of that observable-time rule.
What we found
The record is time-dependent.
OBSERVED The frozen release contains 954 canonical event records and 1,506 source references overall. The cutoff view is a subset of that release, not a complete incident census.

What was knowable then
The cutoff snapshot makes 458 records available for inspection. Those records carry their event dates, source references, geographic labels, and the confidence and precision fields retained by the release. The public artifact preserves counts and references rather than redistributing source articles, text, or images.
A record may describe an earlier event while still being unavailable at the cutoff. Event date, first-observed time, source publication time, and replay cutoff are different fields.
Later evidence
What became known later
493 release records have first-observed times after the cutoff. They are not silently added to the historical result. Three more records had a pre-cutoff first-observed time but no source that satisfied the release’s observable-time rule; they also remain outside the snapshot.
MODELLED “Later” here means later in the release’s observation record. It does not mean that every later record describes an event that occurred after the cutoff.

What remains unresolved
- Incidents never captured by the release.
- Information unavailable to the source set at the historical cutoff.
- Whether the visible record represents the full underlying security situation.
- Equal coverage across publishers, states, LGAs, and event types.
UNKNOWN Absence from the snapshot is not evidence that an incident did not occur.
Why it matters
A better answer can include a sharper boundary.
Retrospective analysis often combines what was reported later with what was available at the time. This Pattern keeps those states apart. That makes the historical question narrower, but it also makes the result more reproducible and less likely to present hindsight as contemporaneous knowledge.
Pattern’s interpretation is a human judgment about how to present the comparison. It does not convert the replay into a probability, forecast, causal explanation, or tactical recommendation.
Limitations
What this does not establish
- This is not a complete national incident census.
- Reporting and source recovery are uneven across publishers, states, LGAs, and event types.
- Administrative centroids are not incident-site coordinates.
- Official claims are not independent corroboration.
- No probability, live alert, forecast, causal effect, or tactical advice is produced.
- Public release includes metadata and citation links only; copyrighted source content is not redistributed.
